The Hot Springs a Great Lament

Last January I was moving out of my house an epic ordeal, twenty years getting packed up. February brought us to Zipolite. We missed the scheduled group visits to the Hot Springs.

March brought us to the newness of the Covid scare. The rest of the schedule for Spring was cancelled, too dangerous to risk the health and welfare of the tribe. The announcement reminded us that we would be together next Fall.

We have arrived at “Next Fall.” The pandemic lingers today. The entire soaking season has been cancelled. There is something about using mask at the springs. Yes, it would stifle the community and then there is that risk to others.

So, tonight I lament. There is sadness. Mt. Lemmon burnt down, many places are more crowded. I was certainly looking forward to the joy of days at those springs, glamping nude in the Eden-like atmosphere.

I have some pictures and I have memories of the reality of hot mineral springs. Here we were last Fall: Continue reading

It isn’t Getting Naked It’s Coming Home

The region around Tucson, Arizona, etc. sustains me. I have come to need these places to ground myself in my being. It has taught me truth and become necessary as a part of my spirit and sense of purpose and place in the world, in life. In short a healthy addiction, something that I couldn’t comprehend life, or care for life, without. Living life without nature and the experience of tasting it naturally, is not fulfilling.

The nature that I share here with you, is as a portal into my inner peace.

There is food, there is shelter, there are interpersonal actions, all necessary for happiness, but this sense of what I am and the wonder, what I’m a piece of, is every bit as important. Otherwise there is only an ego that demands to be fed, and empty part that isn’t fulfilled. I’m left with a restless longing within me.

Yea, that’s what I’m trying to convey with this blog. Every sense, breath, every tingle in every moment needs to be experienced and naturism is a key to that. That is something that we have all known in human history, and are cut off from today. Something becomes imprisoned by our own beliefs and perceptions and creations. The stress, the fears, the news, there is a whole world that we can largely do nothing about, that is stealing away with more personal energy than it justifies.  And, we are to be more than animals surviving. The key to experiencing that starts with the baring of the body and the awareness found in that act’s gifts. It isn’t getting naked, it’s coming home.

One can attack nature, create the mighty hunter, play warrior games with Indian friends (Yes, Hendrix “Castles Made of Sand). You can use use it as a gymnasium only. Nature’s abode can be used as an escape from something, a place of freedom, a venue to party with people, to get blasted. Some just see the potential for condos in a given vista, but being naked there brings one home in a different sense. Experiencing life naturally may bring home a oneness, a sense of a something very real.

I’m saying that naked makes a change in perception, however one can do all of the human activity listed above nude. Focusing on the difference nudity brings, I am guided to my sense of naturism.

Just a taste, maybe a few minutes on a frosty night, to breathe, to feel every sense, to just be aware of what is, without all of the rest. Seeing the stars and the glistening across the ground, the feet alive, being aware of the adjustment, I think you know what I mean at those times. There’s a particular humanity to a simple act. I think that we all need that. You can fully experience and then get warm and shelter after the momentary journey.

Say, “It isn’t getting naked, it’s coming home.” I think that I found a slogan!

Somewhere in the Galiuros: Part III

2020-04-19

Tree Hugging Deluxe: An infinite Moment

We Head back from “enough” on the trail in the Galiuro Mountains. We have been on a stroll to what we are told is “a stand of aspens” where the trail turns and goes up to a peak in the wilderness.

The foliage has gotten thick, scratchy and we’re finding obstructions frequently. We may have missed our turn. Perhaps there is no stand of aspens. One day, I’ll return during a retreat in this canyon, so today, we are easily deterred. We only intended to enjoy wandering a naturist’s paradise, not bushwhacking through overgrown wilderness.

You can see and read the prelude to this story here:

Somewhere in the Galiuros: Part II

We haven’t exerted ourselves and it is a fun comfortable return. There is no “trudging” on sore feet earning our way back to a camp. This is a walk in the park.

Okay, maybe a park with some monkey bars

Somewhere in the Galiuros: Part II

2020-04-19

Sunday:

Waking up to the birds singing, a gentle refreshing scented breeze flowing through the tent and the warmth of the new day’s sun coming through the screen through the trees is…good.

The view looking down at the reflective creek, the color of the rocks and the spring leaves lets us know just where we are…here.

One of our three neighbors comes up the road. There was mention of this yesterday, when we had met. The older man and the little girl would be working on a project at camp, while this walker is making his way to the top of Basset Peak. He’ll be gone for a while. I greet him from my bed, as he passes.

DF gets to her morning, while I lie about and stretch. The plan today is to get to a grove where the trail begins to switchback out of this verdant paradise. It is just about two and a half miles of wandering and then a return. We’ll just enjoy the walk.

Somewhere in the Galiuros: Part I

2020-04-18

Saturday:

While getting a pair of new tires, I was shocked to discover a broken shock. We couldn’t get away until nearly noon.

We’re heading out to the Galiuro Mountains to find possible future glamping spots and take a needed hike in a riparian area along a creek. We along with most people, have been feeling the crunch of the pandemic and our response is to head for the hills and the blessed solitude of nature.

Surprises are in Store for Us

Exploring the Mystery of the Aspen Grove

Early July 2020

It’s a first day of our retreat in The White Mountains of Arizona…”Let’s go for a walk, not too far. This thin air is 10000, feet above sea level. First day pushes can make a person quite ill.”

Curiosity beckons. Across the vast field bordering our chosen campsite, is a dark band across the bottom of the white bark trunks of a grove of white aspen. It is a dark line and we want to investigate its origin. What is causing such a consistent line?

We are in an alpine wilderness. We’re away from most anybody. We journeyed the rough little route that crosses another similar open space, then through a gate. Eventually, the Forest Service road turned into a 4×4 pile of chunky volcanic rock, where few will venture. Perhaps a fellow hiker, but more likely we’d be found by an errant quad or ATV and just a couple of times in a day. This is slightly further away from that shabby trail. We have camped in place with a vast sense of freedom.

Dancing with Wolves

June 2020

An Evening Call:

I woke up to the howl of a wolf! He is a redundant individual, repeating his call. The voice came from the south probably less than the southern border of the great field that I am glamping near. In the quiet calm of the forest, everything takes notice of the message.

Then, closer, another gets my attention. This one sounds more like a whimper, like a puppy in the forest. It can’t be very far for such a sound to carry. As I listen more intently for direction, this one is on the opposite side of my tent. I wonder just what message it is out to convey with this noise. Perhaps it is a pup calling to its mother.

I unzip a window to confirm. Then I quietly arise to unzip the front door of the tent. I had left the outside canvas cover down last night in case of rain and to trap some heat. I poke my head out to look in every direction. These wolves are so close, but the sounds that interrupted my sleep have stopped with the pull of a zipper.

Morning:

I’ve been up just about 45 minutes. I climb out of the tent, noting the morning sun.  The warm light hasn’t reached the woods, but the golden dry grasses of the woodland’s prairie are aglow.

Lemmon Pools

2020-05-31

We have been camped near the Lemmon pools in the Catalina Mountains for two days. The first was a backpack descent finding a good comfortable camp and enjoying it as the day ended. Today, we have hiked, very much nude, through a wonderland of rock formations to the west side of the range to a vista, which looks down to the Tortolita Mountains and beyond. After gathering our water out of a creek and falling sleep, we have arrived back at camp, resting in the shade of our tarp on mattresses. Tomorrow we will spend the morning exploring the illusive Lemon Pools, before packing back to the car.

Wilderness of Rocks Trail: Beyond: Part II

2020-05-30

We have been hiking in the Wilderness of Rocks and filled with awe.

We have been surprised by the unusual number of other hikers. We took no clothing, but even so, nobody gives any objections. Instead all is very positive. As we are about to discover, even extremely positive.

Here is the beginning of this story:

Wilderness of Rocks Trail: Beyond

2020-05-30

It is great weather up here. We’re camped up near Lemmon Pools in the Catalina Mountains. We have all day to explore the Wilderness of Rocks Trail. We can go beyond the farthest point that we have hiked, so far. We can go to the trail’s end and then as far as may be interesting on the intersecting trail.

We plan to be back for a noon lunch, so DF takes only a few grapes to snack. With the shorter distance and it being only 9am, we figure that we only need a liter water bottle and a camera each. The plan is to wear only moccasin-like toe shoes in a sense of complete nudity and unencumbered freedom. Our nakedness here in the wilderness feels very good.

Grass Feels Good on a Body

I figure that most people travel on the previous loop trail, or go to the Lemmon Pools. We have never seen but a few people pass by on the trail when camping near it. This trail is in an even more remote area.

With a sense of bare natural freedom, we walk away from everything to the main trail. We expect a trove of scenic surprises and a very few people, if anybody…we don’t know it now, but surprises will abound. Continue reading
