Tree Hugging Deluxe: An infinite Moment

We Head back from “enough” on the trail in the Galiuro Mountains. We have been on a stroll to what we are told is “a stand of aspens” where the trail turns and goes up to a peak in the wilderness.

The foliage has gotten thick, scratchy and we’re finding obstructions frequently. We may have missed our turn. Perhaps there is no stand of aspens. One day, I’ll return during a retreat in this canyon, so today, we are easily deterred. We only intended to enjoy wandering a naturist’s paradise, not bushwhacking through overgrown wilderness.

We haven’t exerted ourselves and it is a fun comfortable return. There is no “trudging” on sore feet earning our way back to a camp. This is a walk in the park.

Somewhere in the Galiuros: Part II

Sunday:

Waking up to the birds singing, a gentle refreshing scented breeze flowing through the tent and the warmth of the new day’s sun coming through the screen through the trees is…good.

The view looking down at the reflective creek, the color of the rocks and the spring leaves lets us know just where we are…here.

One of our three neighbors comes up the road. There was mention of this yesterday, when we had met. The older man and the little girl would be working on a project at camp, while this walker is making his way to the top of Basset Peak. He’ll be gone for a while. I greet him from my bed, as he passes.

DF gets to her morning, while I lie about and stretch. The plan today is to get to a grove where the trail begins to switchback out of this verdant paradise. It is just about two and a half miles of wandering and then a return. We’ll just enjoy the walk.

Somewhere in the Galiuros: Part I

Saturday:

While getting a pair of new tires, I was shocked to discover a broken shock. We couldn’t get away until nearly noon.

We’re heading out to the Galiuro Mountains to find possible future glamping spots and take a needed hike in a riparian area along a creek. We along with most people, have been feeling the crunch of the pandemic and our response is to head for the hills and the blessed solitude of nature.

Exploring the Mystery of the Aspen Grove

It’s a first day of our retreat in The White Mountains of Arizona…”Let’s go for a walk, not too far. This thin air is 10000, feet above sea level. First day pushes can make a person quite ill.”

Curiosity beckons. Across the vast field bordering our chosen campsite, is a dark band across the bottom of the white bark trunks of a grove of white aspen. It is a dark line and we want to investigate its origin. What is causing such a consistent line?

We are in an alpine wilderness. We’re away from most anybody. We journeyed the rough little route that crosses another similar open space, then through a gate. Eventually, the Forest Service road turned into a 4×4 pile of chunky volcanic rock, where few will venture. Perhaps a fellow hiker, but more likely we’d be found by an errant quad or ATV and just a couple of times in a day. This is slightly further away from that shabby trail. We have camped in place with a vast sense of freedom.
