Picard Connects

The Starship Enterprise has just landed on Earth in the year 2063, while chasing and destroying a Borg ship. Both have transferred back in time to get there. In a missile silo, they have contact with an old spaceship, one that Picard has seen at the Smithsonian centuries later. He places his hand upon the metal outer sheathing.

Data (the man made man): Sir, does tactile contact alter your perception of the Phoenix?

Captain Picard: For humans touch can connect you to an object in a very personal way, Make it seem more real.

Data gives touch a try in his usual curiosity.

(“Star Trek VIII: First Contact”)

Touch does make something real. There can even be a compulsion to reach out and touch someone. People get touched emotionally. People pinch themselves to make sure that they are not dreaming.

Touch is our nature and our birthright. When we touch and are touched by the world, the world feels more alive and real.

By just removing clothing, the entire experience of the planet becomes greater. To step into water nude, or to feel a gentle breeze across the entirety of the body, the heat of the sun, and to be entertained with all of the associations, the messages and knowledge of the moment through the body and sensitivity of the organ called the skin, we are more alive. Again, this is a birthright. To take this away is a wrong.

The holidays are making time difficult to find, so as to publish the stories of our journey through the Manti La Sal National Forest. Progress has been made, although slowed, but sure. The photo is from that drive. A passing cloud is felt, as well as seen.

Acceptance

Friday June 20th 2025 opens up with my eye lids.  I find myself back in the mountain forest under blue skies. Last night’s smell of smoke is gone, replaced by a sense of clarity. All is seen through the net tent, as the sun is getting us up, out and about, acting like a parent sending us off to school. We conked out last night early. A glance at a cell phone tells us that we have slept for more than 12 hours. “How’d we do that?”

“Maybe there actually are fairies with magic powders in the woods.”

“Huh?” “Better check on your pot of gold!”

It is day, everything is telling me, actually shouting at me, the message about the displacement of the calm and peace of the night. I hear the wind blowing high in the trees above, and nearby, the rustling leaves of the young aspen that are determined to someday populate this field of short grasses and dainty flowering greens.

I climb out of the tent stiffly, making my way to my appointment. I find the route through the brush to the office, a pleasant spot that is still slumbering in deep shadows.

As I stand, I notice nibbles on my calves and ankles. Those Utah no-see-ums flash out of my memories. My mind grinds out, “If so, we’re movin’.” But they seem to prefer the shade…

…I sit fully naked in my folding chair, absorbing the warmth of the morning sun, dusty Earth on the soles of my bare feet. There are occasional critters that I launch with a flick of my finger. A fly stops by, I’m thinking, “just to irritate me.” I breathe in, puff my cheeks and then blow out directly at it. It is gone, done with me. I’m reminded, I take note to brush my teeth, swish some water, re-hydrate.

As I focus my attention….

As I Focus My Attention the World Around Me Comes Alive

I disrobe and close my eyes. I simply notice my body, with that intention, the awareness is allowed to travel, making its own itinerary. Soon enough, it glances about to its surroundings and back. The naked body remains the basis of awareness of existence.

I focus on the sensations and the details. Similarly, the world becomes more vivid when I focus on its many details. As I concentrate, my senses come alive.

Then with eyes open, colors are brighter, sounds sharper, and everything that touches my skin –a loving touch, the warmth of a fire, a gentle breeze, heightens my perception and anchors my awareness in the present moment.

My focus enlivens my inner world as well. Time spent in mindful contemplation floods my awareness with the grandeur of so many small things. I notice the feelings, the inner transformations, the raw physical sensations of emotions alone without mind. Now I open my eyes and turn my ears to the divine, as it is expressing all around me, as magnificent beauty and wondrous diversity. All of it, simply right here, right now.

The more I focus my attention fully without the dialog, the more easily I discern the divine expressing all around me. I know that I am of that.

Now, as I walk on in primal nudity in naked nature, it is as I began this experience, anchored with the natural sensations of body.

Just give this a try.

Next week, a story about hiking to the ancient House on Fire.

Some More Thoughts

One may ask me, “Why are you so obsessed with being naked?” My usual response is “Ask yourself why you are clothed. Could that be an obsession?” Nude is the default position. Clothing is an additive. This justifies my lifestyle, but why is it such an important issue to me?

After spending several days acceptably nude, it is most common to notice that putting on clothing, just to be socially acceptable, is physically confining, bunched up, hot, evidently unnatural and often, actually uncomfortable.

Unless I get overwhelmed by cold, I don’t need anything to supplement my natural bodily ability for homeostasis. The body, the mind, the whole system adjusts as a complete system. It is quite complex, an ancient natural gift adapted to adept. It is honed and amazing. The freer that it is to do its job, the better it works.

I am my body and also, there is more. Something essential is lost in clothing. The joy of nudity is lost, but something more than clothing is taken away. In my skin, I’m in touch with the world around me, all senses are more aware and I’m more integrated. This aligns with and supports a more natural place, or sense of being. It opens the pathways to other senses in a unified natural activity of awareness and body.

Other senses are felt about the body, such as, I have a greater sense of well-being. I have a deeper sense of being a part of something quite amazing, even oneness. If one just tries free range naturism and is simply being aware; there is a generally obvious observation, which can expand into more in time.

This is another short post, something that I wrote a while back. There simply isn’t enough time these couple of weeks to sit down, take a complete day and finish the complex continuation, or the finale of either of the two story directions that we are flowing toward.  Please, give time time as it unfolds.

Solstice Celebration 2023

2023-12-21

Under the heading of things to do nude with your friends, here’s a Holiday Tale.

As I’ve shared from time to time, we have been a part of a community sweat/sauna that has existed for something like 40 years. The land was sold a few years back, we ended up with a 501c3 and a bank account. After a few years of struggling to find a new location, I moved to a new home in more central Tucson, with the best conditions that I could find and we built a new sweat on my property.

We have a tribe, or an extended family of sorts, in our hearts. We have been having weekly “sweats” occasional fundraisers, work parties, a Thanksgiving gathering, and then last week, a Solstice Yule ceremony.

Around 20 or 30 members came around during the evening, happy to see old friends.

It starts with 16 to 18 people with confused expressions on their faces, being given a nail, a piece of wood, a 3×5 card and a pencil.  Around sundown, they all strip into proper sauna attire. DF smudges them, as they entered the sweat, one at a time.

I am waiting inside, next to the ambiance of a candelabrum, my notes are in hand, rolled up like a scroll. I greet each, as they choose their places among the double rows of redwood benches. I had tied red ribbons to decorate the top of my usual Russian felt sauna cap. Before long, job well done, DF enters, finding her own spot on one of the benches, which are now filled cheek to cheek.

I introduce myself as, “I’m Jon and I’ll be your facilitator tonight… Also, by the power vested in me, by no one in particular, the high priest.” I introduce DF as, “your high priestess.” It gets a few chuckles.

I explain, faking a solemn serious concern, “I don’t know if you have noticed, but the days have been getting shorter. If this trajectory continues, the sun may disappear altogether! For hundreds of thousands of years, people all over the world have been gathering during these times and chanting and whooping and hollering, praying for the sun to return…Obviously this has been working.” There are more chuckles.

Miller Peak IV: Heading Home

2018-09-24

We are in the Huachuca Mountains. We have spent a couple of days here and accomplished our climb to Miller Peak. We have a casual day planned, heading back down the mountain.

Here is the rest of the story, which is in three other parts:

https://thefreerangenaturist.org/2019/04/12/miller-peak-bathtub-spring/

https://thefreerangenaturist.org/2019/04/18/miller-peak-camping-and-a-surprise/

https://thefreerangenaturist.org/2019/04/23/miller-peak-ascent-to-a-parting-day-2/

DF has heard an owl in the night. She tells me that she is grateful that it came. She says that it felt big. It had a big sound, “I’m here. Anybody else here? Who, who?”

After my climb out of the tent, I stand stiffly and take in the wilderness. These trees all tell a story; it is their history they speak of. It is like a mother’s stretchmarks or an old soldier’s wounds. These are tangled, bent, burled and shaped by their lives. The rings have a tale, too. There is an old hulk with a twisted trunk near the watercourse. The twist says that it had had a ley energy shape it. When the fires came, they burnt it to be like a barber pole.

Miller Peak: Ascent to a Parting: Day 2

2018-09-23

Morning, day number two in the Huachuca Mountains. We have a personal story to share with you….

The two Previous Parts can be found here: https://thefreerangenaturist.org/2019/04/18/miller-peak-camping-and-a-surprise/

As the Day Began:

Birds are up and moving about with their new day. I hear the sound of DF rhythmically pounding her down jacket. She is waking with her chi gung, slapping her body into action. Sun beams are all around, but the tent is in shade. Sun and shade are as different as night and day. I roll over and through the net right next to me, like bed fellows, are yellow daisies and green tall grass. I greet them good morning.

Miller Peak: Bathtub Spring

2018-09-22

It’s early in the evening; the driving is slow up the dark twisted switchback road to the Ramsey Campground. The road’s dark edge is as near as the other side, the illuminated steep slope upward. Both are threatening.

We took off work earlier this afternoon, leaving Tucson to arrive for an earlier sleep. We are gaining a great deal of elevation by driving up here to stage our trip through the Huachuca Mountains to Miller Peak.

We left Tucson of course naked. Protected in the cab of the vehicle, we are still comfortably naked. The air outside is getting cooler as night deepens and thousands of feet of elevation change. A window is cracked, so that we can smell the freshness and pine scent of the air. Our sense of ourselves is adventure and freedom.

As we climb around a bend, there at the next switchback, we see a very large puma, a mountain lion. The massive side of its body is positioned to our view, its head turned toward us. It watches our headlights and listens to the roar of the red SUV. It seems to be in consideration, pondering if we are a danger, or useful and the next course of action, a monarch’s thinking. The powerful athletic physique, as big as a man stands tall, is poised, as we come up the road. It has been dark and then there is this amazing sight in the headlights.

It begins acting like it is too cool to be bothered as big cats do; show no fear. It begins to move and suddenly in one long leap, it gracefully leaps off into the darkness of the steep hillside, disappeared. I have to consider that we are going out into this wilderness naked and alone. Continue reading

Liberation on the Trail

I wrote this article for “N” magazine. It was published in the Winter 2018-19 issue. I’ve added three more pictures.

Liberation on the Trail

We see these advertisements and articles of vibrant people out backpacking on trails across the world. They are athletes crossing wilderness mountains, thru-hiking for hundreds of miles. This is the face of backpacking.

For some of us, this is reminiscent of days of youth, packing 50 pound weights, or military expeditions. Some see a challenge, some an uncomfortable activity. Some will write it off for health issues.

I’m in my sixties, now. I have had back injuries from rear-enders. I’m just not up for packing 45 pounds around the Bolivian Andes anymore. Did you see an elderly Robert Redford and Nick Nolte dragging up the Appalachian Trail in “A Walk in the Woods”?

My girlfriend and I love to explore, to find places remote enough that we can be naturally nude. We can spend days imbibing nature, photographing it, smelling it, and feeling every subtle sensation of our nudity. We find that there is a special sense of spirituality and oneness. We find wonderment and vistas, solitude and the teachings of the wild.

There is a certainty that most of us can participate nude on the trail. Here is our personal story of evolution, from the couch to the wilderness. I hope that it brings to you some inspiration. There are solutions. We can do this!
