White Mountain Retreat: Pt4

Bathing

We’ve been setting up camp for our White Mountain Sojourn. I presented that in the last Post, number 3 in the series. There is more. I didn’t realize how much more, when I started to write.

Here’s how we bathe:

We must first drive down to the spring with its creek. It is beautiful. We have camped here before, but the 4th of July crowds will be there and some have arrived early. We need solitude and body freedom.

We slog to the spring in the wet grasses and slushy water that tends to seep out across a gentle floodplain slope.

A creek full of fresh water comes out of the ground here.

It is idyllic, green and lush, with a sense of a miracle.

The fresh water rolls over rocks, as I find a shady place to squat and fill the plastic five gallon shower bag.

Much heavier, it gets awkward heaving and leaving, but we have it placed in the SUV, without a leak, or flood.

Back at camp, I place the solar heated shower bag in the clearing between the trees to gather the sun’s energy for a couple of hours.

The wind is still very active. We need a wind break to shower. It is very pleasant to shower outside with hot water, but a breeze can be quite chilling. I search for the best solution around camp.

We find a tarp. There are four trees together. I wrap the tarp around them, placing nails into the grommet holes and using the flat end of my hatchet as a hammer.

It makes a nice aerodynamic “V” shape into the winds.

Eventually, it feels wonderfully refreshing, during a break in the strong winds. The water is very warm across our bodies. Getting used to the process of shutting the precious water off and on with a small plastic lever and one soapy hand takes some learning. At first, we have to help each other.

Spending our time nude nearly constantly, hiking and around camp for a few days with little but a spit bath has made a buildup that we don’t realize. Out exposed to the fresh air we naturally haven’t seemed dirty, but scraping the skin with a wet rag, there is a sense of pores opening. We feel that freshness. Then, naked in the air and staying that way, a whole new bodily awareness is gifted to us all over. Every bit of a body is pleasantly alerted to the sun’s rays and the wonderful temperature of the air at this time in the afternoon.

There is that something about bathing in the sun on a warm day. A solar laundry dryer is installed for wash cloths and wet towels between two trees.

Our bodies feel so wonderfully naked from this. We walk, arms out, drying in delight. It is time for a naked stroll just for the sensual pleasure of it….
